The U.S. Postal Service recommends mailing your completed ballot at least one week before your election office needs to receive it, which for most is Oct. 27. While that's just advice and not a separate voting deadline, I recommend following it if you can.
What Is USPS Doing to Help Ballots Arrive on Time?
Like in previous elections, USPS is putting additional measures in place across the country. Starting Saturday, October 24, the agency is adding:
- Extra deliveries and special pickups
- More sorting and processing resources to move ballots quickly
- Local transportation arrangements to get ballots to election offices sooner
These extra steps support delivery, but you should still allow plenty of time. If your ballot is ready, get it on its way.
Is My Ballot Safe in the Mail?
USPS says the mail is a secure way to return your ballot, with established procedures for handling and delivering election mail. There’s also a dedicated federal law enforcement agency helping protect your vote. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service works to prevent mail theft and fraud, inspect postal facilities, and coordinate with law enforcement to address potential problems.
